Our website care, marketing and visibility services help keep your business online and continuously encouraging prospective clients to engage with your business.

Australian Cloud Based Hosting

We use Cloud servers. After years of using traditional web servers, we have moved to Cloud Servers as they provide more robust performance features that simply can’t be matched by traditional servers.

Dynamic Resources
The cloud servers we use can dynamically increase its own resources to support traffic peaks in your website.

The traditional server is physically bound by the performance of the single computer it’s running on. It may attempt to ‘balance’ resources, by throttling back the websites operating on it, so some run slower.

Australian Servers
Apart from supporting Australian service providers, there’s a much more pragmatic reason for using Australian based servers: Performance and reliability.

International servers don’t have to use international cabling and infrastructure to connect with the primarily Australian website visitors that our client’s site usual target.  Internet traffic has to share these international cables, so they do tend to be busy. Data transitioning through the inter-continental infrastructure has inherent delays that get multiplied during the multiple communications required to load a web page(s) in your website. Eliminating propagation delays introduced by the additional equipment by locating the web servers in Australia improves the communication performance between your Australian clients and your website.

Its also notable that website speed is emerging as a key Google SEO metric, so the faster your site runs the better it performs in Google searches.

Users also vote for speed with their mouse.

  • Amazon  says: “1 second of page load slowdown would cost Amazon 1.6 billion in sales per year”
  • Walmart says: “When load times jump from 1 second to 4 seconds, conversions decline sharply. For every 1 second of improvement, we experienced a 2-second conversion increase”

Although the hardware is extremely reliable, international connections through submarine cabling and infrastructure does fail or get overloaded from time to time. Using local Australian servers that are interconnected by local equipment simplifies the connection between Australian website visitors and local web servers.

Our competitors tend to minimise this conversation, as international web hosting is considerably cheaper than quality local web hosting services, so there is a price advantage for them to go overseas. Unfortunately, it’s their clients who pay for the disadvantage in term of lost sales.

Off-Site Backups

We push weekly copies of your website and its database to DropBox to create a 15 week back history.

Why 15 weeks of backup?
We store 15 copies of your website in backups, so that if we need to, we can go back 15 weeks in your website’s history. If you are wondering why we store so many copies, think about if your site got infected, but you didn’t realise it for several weeks. If we only stored a couple of days, like most web hosts, then the there’s no backup copy of the pre-infected site that could be restored to reinstate your site. This means you’ll need to look at options like recreating your entire site, which will take longer and cost you more.

Why off-site backups
Newbies probably don’t remember when Distribute IT’s web servers were compromised in 2011, impacting 4,800 business websites. The web servers were unrecoverable compromised by hackers, including all backups. Distribute IT’s clients were unable to restore their sites for months. Sorry but you cant convince me that this won’t happen again…

We’ve been looking after website for 20+ years, and learn from lessons like this. Consequently, we store regular backups somewhere other than the web servers where our website are hosted to avoid this happening for our clients. Its what we think professional website care is about.   Its also something that we’ve learn over time is important for our clients.

Database backup – What database?
WordPress stores all the information and content for your website inside a database.
If you don’t store a backup copy of that database’s content, you cant recreate your website from the backup.

If like many web hosts, you are just backing up the WordPress files, then you won’t be able to re-create your website should you need to.

Hacker Protection

Our ‘hack hardening’ includes both web server and in-site components

This post on hack hardening provides background and detailed information on the whys and hows.

WordPress Core, Theme & Plugin Updates

Being updated means peace of mind

If your website is built inside of WordPress, then ensuring its software is kept updated to latest the release is one of the simplest ways to minimise your risk of being hacked.

WordPress is composed of layers of software, each with potential updates:

  • WordPress Core
  • Theme
  • Plugins

WordPress ‘core’ software
This is the software framework that WordPress operates within.  It’s maintained by a community of dedicated WordPress enthusiasts, who regularly release updates to address things like:

  • bug fixes
  • add new features
  • improve performance
  • enhance existing features to stay up to date with new industry standards
  • fix ‘exploits’

As updated software is made publicly available, the versioning details may reveal an issue that has been resolved in that release. Hacker’s can review the updates for each version, then their software can crawl through the internet looking for WordPress sites that haven’t been updated, and then target the reported exploit.

If they discover your website hasn’t been updated, you immediately become a hacking target, with the hackers software probing your site knowing exactly what its weaknesses are.

WordPress Themes

Themes provide the look and feel for your website. They are inter-connected to the core WordPress software. As themes contain software components, they may need to be updated from time to time, in much the way that the WordPress core software does. There may also be a need to update the theme in response to core software changes.

What is different about themes is that they are usually created by individuals and organisations who are outside of the WordPress core software team. This may result in a couple of issues for WordPress website owners.

Theme Updates can be problematic

Theme Updates rely on the theme author to produce updates, so updates may be delayed or even not addressed at all.
This can be the case especially for older and/or less popular themes where there is no ongoing support.

Ongoing theme support is a critical consideration for your new website.  The theme is usually selected by your web developer when they build your new website. As an owner, you often have little or no knowledge about or input on the select theme. Then suddenly you find that the theme embedded in your site is no longer supported and you are left exposed to hackers or there are technical issues with your site due to the unsupported theme.

Web developers can also deploy your website with a ‘locked’ theme that cannot be updated and so also runs the risk of hacker exposure and/or technical compatibility issues with the WordPress core.

Here’s what we suggest for a new website

If you are having a new WordPress site constructed, we strongly suggest you insist that the developer ensure:

– The Theme selected has a clear support plan.
This may require that you licence the theme (referred to as a ‘premium theme’), and/or also pay an annual maintenance fee for the theme.
These fees are usually trivial – maybe $US50 for the theme licence which includes 12 months support.

–  The complete theme is installed into your site, and not just a locked or a child theme

As a general rule, I suggest you ensure that the theme also has a large installed base with an active support community for websites using that theme.

Plugin Updates

Plugins are also produced by a diverse range of software developers, so similar to themes, there may be updates required after a core software update.

There are also several active test communities eg Wordfence who investigate and report potential exploits they find in plugins. Fortunately, as the Wordfence team are good guys, when they find a vulnerability or exploit they contact the theme or plugin author to first allow them time to produce a fix before announcing their finding to the world.

Again, the issue here is that as soon as hackers also get this information they can reconfigure their hack scanning software to find victim websites for this new exploit, before they are updated.

Basic SEO

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a complex service that is highly dependant on your website’s current Google performance plus the degree of competitiveness in your online market. We will perform an SEO review for your website prior to presenting our proposal for SEO for your website. Our baseline service, Basic SEO is $600 per month.

Conversion Tracking
Website Content Updates

We perform website content updates for you. If a staff member has left or a new one joined we’ll update the About Us page for you. We aim to complete requested updates within 1 working day.

This saves your team from having to learn how to edit WordPress (they’ll quickly find that it’s not as easy as some people would have you think)
We can also add new pages, even new facilities on your website. We’ll suggest how your website might be able to be improved, then roll that change out for you.

No-fuss updates to your website, bundled in our monthly fee.

Google Ads Campaigns

Our team has been building and maintaining Google Ads campaigns for over 10 years.
We can generally out-perform campaigns created by the big end of town for significantly less investment.
As a small business ourselves, we understand that big budgets don’t always result in big outcomes.

As we also offer SEO services we can blend your online marketing objectives across SEO and Google Ads for better outcomes at a reduced cost.

We’ll collaborate with your team to ensure your online advertising strategy, graphics and copywriting will outperform your competitors.
Then we’ll build your campaign(s); install the conversion tracking and provide real-time online reporting that’s second to none.

We have a modest fee structure and don’t use contracts to lock you in.

Contact us to discuss your online campaigning requirements.

Performance Reporting

We use Google DataStudio to deliver both on-screen and email reporting for you.
The data is presented in chart and table form with comparison to the last period for easy interpretation.

We can custom build your reports to include metrics and business-specific filters that you’d like to see reported.

The real-time reports can be accessed online, and allow you to dial in a date range or interactively apply preset filters so you see what you want.

Emailed PDF reports are dispatched monthly for you to review when you want.

Let’s talk.

If you need your website to be snappy fast, always available and to generate more sales leads for your business send some info about you and it we’ll quote  you:
